As far as I know Coppermine always checks if the visitor has access to the picture, according to the permissions in its original album. So, as you already said, it's not possible to display "private"...

Works for me as expected if I apply my suggested change. Maybe we're talking about different things. Please attach a screenshot and highlight the place where the "name of your site" doesn't change.
