Image compression
I ran the site against pagespeedtest.com, and it failed on image compression. Is there a plugin that will optimize images? Or is this something that should be done on the backend?

Run the same test on some other image-centric sites. You'll probably see similar results. Image sites are supposed to have good images that are not overly compressed.

When changing mysql_ functions so they will work with PHP 7+, it would be best for you to use the cpg_db_ versions (as found in include/functions.inc.php). Doing so will help future-proof the code.

That file you mention is not part of coppermine. It could be that your server has been compromised in some way. You really need to go through and check for erroneous files, the update to the latest release.
